4 Things I'm Thinking About
A recap of last month's obsessions, from Barbie to a painting from the 18th Century
1. The Barbie movie
“Want to go see the Barbie movie after lunch?”
“Yes.”
“Really? You’ve been teasing me about my Barbie obsession all week.”
“I’ll do it for you, Mom. But also because I want to play arcade games after.”
“Deal.”
“Do you have anything pink to wear? Like a Barbie t-shirt? Or maybe pink heels?”
“Hmmm. Good question. Do you have anything pink to wear?”
“I’ll wear my pink socks.”
I’m sorry if you’ve had enough of Barbie. I haven’t. I know we’ve been bombarded with everything and anything Barbie-related for what feels like years. I just saw the movie with my 8yo son yesterday and it was spectacular. I irritated the lady sitting to my right by laughing out loud many times. I’m usually a quiet movie-goer, but this movie wanted me to have FUN so I rolled with it.
I wasn’t sure what to wear to the theatre. As last week’s Obsessed Interview guest Leah Legault thoughtfully said, “To me, it’s about bringing out the essence of Barbie in yourself. It isn't so much about any particular colour or style. It’s pulling yourself together and having an outfit that brings out your best self.”
I’ve always wanted to be a cool girl. Someone with edgy vibes and fashion-forward style choices. A girl with multiple minimalist gold earrings, highlighted by a blunt bob tucked neatly behind her ears. I’ll never be a cool girl because I’m too scared to get a second hole pierced. I didn’t tell my son, but I do have pink heels. They don’t feel like “me” anymore. I love fashion and style but can’t seem to wear anything but jogging pants. These days my best self is sneakers, sweats and a thin gold cuff bracelet. The best I could do for the Barbie movie, given the circumstances (mom with a kid who refuses to go to camp so she keeps him home all summer), was to show up as Tired Mom Barbie™: navy cotton shorts from the grocery store, red sweater with holes at the cuffs, green socks and white sneakers.

Which I’ve privately renamed “Motherhood.”
